The Boot Configuration Data, also known as BCD, is a security sensitive file – a database that does not need firmware for boot-time configuration data. Whereas BitLocker encryption has to work in sync with the Boot Configuration Data file and also has to verify the BCD file whenever the computer is booted.
At times, you can also encounter issues in using the BitLocker Drive Encryption Tool. One of these issues is getting the following error:
“The BitLocker Setup failed to export the BCD (Boot Configuration Data) store, You may need to manually prepare your drive for BitLocker.”
Here are a few suggestions you can try if you keep on getting this kind of error message when using the BitLocker Drive Encryption in your Windows 10 computer.
Option 1 – Try to mark the partition as active
You need to check if the drive is active first. How? Follow these steps:

  • Open the Disk Management from the WinX Menu.
  • After that, check if the target drive is active or not. If it isn’t active, right click on it and select the “Mark as Active” option.
  • Then on the confirmation dialogue box, click Yes.

Option 2 – Try to repair the Master Boot Record and rebuild the BCD file
The error could be caused by a corrupted BCD file. To fix it, you need to try and rebuild the BCD file as well as repair the MBR and then check if it fixed the problem.
Option 3 – Point the BCD to the correct path
You can also encounter this problem if one the entries in the BCD that is listed below store points to the incorrect partition.

  1. Windows Boot Manager
  2. Windows Memory Tester
  3. Resume from Hibernate

To point the Windows Boot Manager to the right partition, Microsoft suggests you follow the steps below:

  • Right click on Start and then select the Command Prompt (administrator).
  • Next, type in the following command and hit Enter to execute it:

bcdedit –set {bootmgr} device partition=C:
Note: In the command, you executed, “C:” is the system partition drive. Now the next thing you have to do is point the Windows Memory Tester to the right partition by following these steps:

  • Just like on the previous steps, open Command Prompt as administrator again.
  • After that, type in the following command then hit Enter to execute it:

bcdedit -set {memdiag} device partition=C:
Note: Once again, “C:” is the system partition drive. After you’ve executed that command, all that’s left for you to do is make Resume from Hibernate point to the right partition.

  • Open Command Prompt as administrator.
  • Afterward, execute the following command and tap Enter to execute it: bcdedit -enum all
  • After you tap Enter, it will display all the details for the Resume from Hibernate entry. Take note of the “identifier” value from the information given and enter the following command:

bcdedit -set {identifier} device partition=C:
That should do it.
