Over the past few weeks, Microsoft “insiders” have been spreading rumors that the company will reveal Windows 9 at the end of September 2014.
Now, Microsoft made those rumors official. The company is holding a “Windows event” in San Francisco on September 30th.
Emails were sent out to various tech publications today. Insiders around the world grew giddy when they realized their September 30th predictions were (or at least appeared to be) correct.
At the event, Microsoft is expected to reveal major features of the new operating system along with its official name. Microsoft may also choose to release a Technical Preview to users.
Of course, all the insiders could be totally wrong and Microsoft could just be releasing the next Windows 8 update. But that doesn’t appear to be the case.
Key features of Windows 9 are rumored to include:
-New Start menu
-Virtual desktops like Mac OS X
-Notification center
-Cortana integration
windows 9 2
Early videos make Windows 9 look like a mix between Windows 8 and Windows 7. If Microsoft follows the same cycle of Good OS/Bad OS, then Windows 9 will be the success after Windows 8’s failure.
Considering only 15% of Windows users are currently using Windows 8/8.1, Microsoft has a big opportunity to market Windows 9 to the millions of Windows users still on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.
We’ll see if Windows 9/Threshold is worth switching for on September 30th.
