The My Computer screen is a classic part of Windows that has been around since Windows 95. On the My Computer screen, Windows users will find a list of all the local hard disk drives connected to their computer as well as removable storage drives, CD/DVD drives, network drives, and more.
But in most cases, the My Computer screen features a lot of empty white space. So why not add shortcuts to the My Computer screen to make it more useful?
Unfortunately, adding shortcuts to the My Computer screen isn’t as straightforward as you may think. Follow the steps below to learn how to add a shortcut to your My Computer window:
Step 1) Open a Windows Run command by pressing Windows Key + R

Step 2) Type this into the Run command box and press Enter: %appdata%\microsoft\Windows\Network Shortcuts
Step 3) If Step 2 didn’t work, try adding quotation marks around the path
Step 4) Right click an empty part of the window and then hover your mouse over ‘New’ to view a list of New creation options.
Step 5) Click New > Shortcut
Step 6) Now, you just have to identify the path of the shortcut you wish to link to. To do that, browse to the shortcut file you use to access whatever program or game you’re trying to open. If you enjoy playing Battlefield 3, for example, then choose the file at C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Battlefield 3\bf3.exe

Step 7) Click ‘Next’ to name your shortcut and when you click ‘Finish’, you’ll be able to find the shortcut you just created on the My Computer screen. You can create as many shortcuts as you want, which is useful if you want your My Computer window to be the main launching point for your system.
