What is Cyclone ransomware? And how does it carry out its attack?

Cyclone ransomware is new malicious infection designed to encrypt files to prevent its victims from accessing them and urges them to pay a ransom to get their files back. This new crypto-malware is coded using the Python programming language. It aims to target files with these extensions:
.3dm, .3g2, .3gp, .7zip, .aaf, .accdb, .aep, .aepx, .aet, .ai, .aif, .as, .as3, .asf, .asp, .asx, .avi, .bmp, .c, .class, .cpp, .cs, .csv, .dat, .db, .dbf, .doc, .docb, .docm, .docx, .dot, .dotm, .dotx, .dwg, .dxf, .efx, .eps, .fla, .flv, .gif, .h, .idml, .iff, .indb, .indd, .indl, .indt, .inx, .jar, .java, .jpeg, .jpg, .js, .m3u, .m3u8, .m4u, .max, .mdb, .mid, .mkv, .mov, .mp3, .mp4, .mpa, .mpeg, .mpg, .msg, .pdb, .pdf, .php, .plb, .pmd, .png, .pot, .potm, .potx, .ppam, .ppj, .pps, .ppsm, .ppsx, .ppt, .pptm, .pptx, .prel, .prproj, .ps, .psd, .py, .ra, .rar, .raw, .rb, .rtf, .sdf, .sdf, .ses, .sldm, .sldx, .sql, .svg, .swf, .tif, .txt, .vcf, .vob, .wav, .wma, .wmv, .wpd, .wps, .xla, .xlam, .xll, .xlm, .xls, .xlsb, .xlsm, .xlsx, .xlt, .xltm, .xltx, .xlw, .xml, .xqx, .xqx, .zip
It makes use of the AES 256 cipher to encode data and appends the .cyclone extension at the end of every file’s names.  After the encryption is done, it opens a program window labeled “Cyclone Ransomware v2.40”. This program window asks users to pay the ransom to recover the encrypted files. Here’s the complete context of the ransom note:
“Cyclone Ransomware
The important files on your computer have been encrypted with military-grade AES-256 bit encryption.
Your documents, videos, images and other forms of data are now inaccessible, and cannot be unlocked without the decryption key. This key is currently being stored on a remote server.
To acquire this key, transfer the Bitcoin Fee to the specified wallet address before the time runs out.
If you fail to take action within this time window, the decryption key will be destroyed and access to your files will be permanently lost.”
On its ransom note, developers of Cyclone ransomware indicates a specific time period during which the victim has to make the payment else the encrypted files will be erased permanently. Believe no such thing as the encrypted files are still salvageable through the help of some alternative method you can try which will be given later on.
How is Cyclone ransomware disseminated online?
Cyclone ransomware’s malicious file is disseminated through spam emails where the email contains an infected attachment used to download and install Cyclone ransomware into the compromised computer. A lot of users were tricked into opening the email as the crooks often disguise them as something that would really catch the attention of users so that they’ll go ahead and open the email and download the attached file without hesitation. Since spam emails have become the usual go-to distribution for ransomware threats, it is a must that you stir clear of any suspicious-looking emails.
Step 1: Close Cyclone ransomware’s program window and tap Ctrl + Shift + Esc keys to open the Task Manager.

Step 2: After opening the Task Manager, look for Cyclone ransomware’s malicious process, right click on it and select End Process or End Task.

Step 3: Close the Task Manager.

Try to recover your encrypted files using the Shadow Volume copies
Restoring your encrypted files using Windows’ Previous Versions feature will only be effective if Cyclone ransomware hasn’t deleted the shadow copies of your files. But still, this is one of the best and free methods there is, so it’s definitely worth a shot.
To restore the encrypted file, right-click on it and select Properties, a new window will pop-up, then proceed to Previous Versions. It will load the file’s previous version before it was modified. After it loads, select any of the previous versions displayed on the list like the one in the illustration below. And then click the Restore button.

Make sure that you have completely removed Cyclone ransomware from your computer, to do so, follow the advanced removal guide below.
