What is Cryp70n1c ransomware? And how does it carry out its attack?

Cryp70n1c ransomware is also known Cryp70n1c Army is a Hidden Tear-based ransomware infection discovered on November 23, 2017 and seems to be a part of a Ransomware as a Service or RaaS attack. This ransomware spreads as a fake PDF cracker. Once it is installed it starts to scan the entire drive of the computer for the following file formats:
txt, .doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx, .pdf, .pps, .ppt, .pptx, .odt, .gif, .jpg, .png, .db, .csv, .sql, .mdb.sln.php, .asp, .aspx, .html, .xml, .psd, .frm, .myd, .myi, .dbf, .mp3, .mp4, .avi, .mov, .mpg, .rm, .wmv, .m4a, .mpa, .wav, .sav, .gam, .log, .ged, .msg, .myo, .tax, .ynab, .ifx, .ofx, .qfx, .qif, .qdf, .tax2013, .tax2014, .tax2015, .box, .ncf, .nsf, .ntf, .lwp
Cryp70n1c ransomware uses AES cryptography in its encryption process and adds the .cryp70n1c extension on each affected files. It then drops a file named READ_IT.txt which is placed on the desktop of the computer containing the following context:
“This computer has been hacked,
our personal files have been encrypted. Send us 0,05 Bitcoin to get the decryption passcode. After that, you’ll be able to get your files back again. Failure to do so within 3 days will result in all your files being deleted & lost forever – visit www[.]luno[.]com to buy Bitcoin and once you have purchased 0.05 please send them to the following Bitcoin Address 1KDQcgujZKjMgZkYSbM77pLeGSDq8walRM thank you and have a great day. If you need to contact us for any reason, please e-mail us [email protected]
Cryp70n1c ransomware also changes the computer’s desktop background which has an ANSI skull image and a red background which was also used from the first variant of the Petya ransomware. The program windows contains message that states:
 
“We are the Cryptonic Army
All data files have been locked and in 3 days they will be deleted unless you pay us
Please find the text file on your desktop for instructions”

How is Cryp70n1c ransomware disseminated?
As stated earlier, Cryp70n1c ransomware is disseminated as a fake PDF cracker named PDF-Cracker-v2.0.1. Meaning to say, it can infect your computer when you install software in an illegal way from suspicious free file sharing networks.
 
Refer to the removal instructions provided below to terminate Cryp70n1c ransomaware from your PC.
Step 1: Tap the Win + E keys to open File Explorer.
 
Step 2: Navigate to the following locations and look for the files named local.exe, ransom.jpg and READ_IT.txt which are all created by Cryp70n1c ransomware.

  • %HOMEDRIVE%\user | ransom.jpg
  • %USERPROFILE%\Desktop | READ_IT.txt

Step 3: Close the File Explorer and tap Ctrl + Shift + Esc keys to open the Task Manager.
 
 

Step 4: After opening the Task Manager, look for Cryp70n1c ransomware’s malicious process, right click on it and select End Process or End Task.
 
 

Step 5: Close the Task Manager.
 
Before you proceed to the next steps below, make sure that you are tech savvy enough to the point where you know exactly how to use and navigate your computer’s Registry. Keep in mind that any changes you make will highly impact your computer. Step 6: Tap Win + R to open Run and then type in regedit in the field and tap enter to pull up Windows Registry.

Step 7: Navigate to the following path:
HKU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
 
Step 8: Look for a value named BrowserUpdateCheck created by Cryp70n1c ransomware and delete it.
 
Step 9: Close the Registry Editor and open Control Panel by pressing the Windows key + R, then type in appwiz.cpl and then click OK or press Enter.
 
Step 10: Look for Cryp70n1c ransomware or any suspicious program and then Uninstall it/them.
 
 

Step 11: Empty your Recycle Bin.
Try to recover your encrypted files using the Shadow Volume copies
Restoring your encrypted files using Windows’ Previous Versions feature will only be effective if Cryp70n1c ransomware hasn’t deleted the shadow copies of your files. But still, this is one of the best and free methods there is, so it’s definitely worth a shot.
To restore the encrypted file, right-click on it and select Properties, a new window will pop-up, then proceed to Previous Versions. It will load the file’s previous version before it was modified. After it loads, select any of the previous versions displayed on the list like the one in the illustration below. And then click the Restore button.

Make sure that you have completely removed Cryp70n1c ransomware form your computer, to do so, follow the advanced removal guide below.
Perform a full system scan using SpyRemover Pro. To do so, follow these steps:
