What is RaRansomware ransomware? And how does it carry out its attack?

RaRansomware ransomware is a new data-encrypting malware that was discovered as of late. It aims to encrypt important data in an infected computer in exchange for a ransom. Once it infects a computer, it will perform a series of malicious activities – it starts with dropping malicious files which may be placed on the following system folders:

  • %AppData%
  • %Desktop%
  • %Temp%
  • %User Profile%

After it places its malicious files in the system folders, RaRansomware ransomware will use some of these files in order to stay hidden from programs installed in the computer that might stop its attack. It also utilizes these files to make alterations in the Windows Registry so it can run every time victims start their computers. Once it achieves persistence, it now scans the computer for its targeted files. After it finds them, it starts the encryption by applying both AES 128 and RSA 1028 ciphers. As a result, the targeted files become inaccessible. After the encryption, it releases its ransom note contained in an html file named “RaRansomware – Recovery instructions.html” which reads:
“All your files are belong to us!
All your personal files, including, but not limited to:
Photos, videos, databases and office projects have been encrypted using a mix of two very strong cryptographic algorithms – AES-128 and RSA-1028. Original files have been overwritten, recovery tools and software will not help you.
The only way to recover your files, are to meet our demands.
Be warned, we won’t be able to recover your files if you start fiddling with them.
You have 120 hours (5 days) from this moment to send us payment, or you files will be lost in eternity.
To start the recovery process you need to download and install the Tor browser, which is easily done from their own home-page.
Once you have the Tor browser running you need to navigate to hxxp://recovery6m3lvkxg.onion and then input your personal id displayed below.
Further payment instructions will be given once logged in.”
How does RaRansomware ransomware spread online?
RaRansomware ransomware might spread online with the help of spam emails. This distribution method is commonly used by cyber crooks as it always succeeds in infecting computers of users. Try to recover your encrypted files using the Shadow Volume copies
Restoring your encrypted files using Windows’ Previous Versions feature will only be effective if RaRansomware ransomware hasn’t deleted the shadow copies of your files. But still, this is one of the best and free methods there is, so it’s definitely worth a shot.
To restore the encrypted file, right-click on it and select Properties, a new window will pop-up, then proceed to Previous Versions. It will load the file’s previous version before it was modified. After it loads, select any of the previous versions displayed on the list like the one in the illustration below. And then click the Restore button.
