What is REvil ransomware? And how does it carry out its attack?

REvil ransomware is a new notorious ransomware threat which is also known as Sodin or Sodinokibi ransomware. It has become quite infamous due to its apparent connection with the dangerous and equally notorious GandCrab ransomware. According to security experts, this new crypto-virus is a RaaS or ransomware-as-a-service just like GandCrab.
Once it carries out its attack, REvil ransomware will exploit zero-day vulnerability known as “CVE-2019-2725” which allows the attackers to connect remotely to the host machine with the HTTP access to the Oracle’s WebLogic server and manually inject the ransomware in the system. After its infiltration, REvil ransomware will use the Salsa20 encryption algorithm in encrypting its targeted data in the system, as well as on the connected networks. Following data encryption, it changes the desktop wallpaper of the infected computer and appends a randomly-generated extension to the affected files and drops a ransom note that’s either named “[random characters]-readme.txt” or “HOW-TO-DECRYPT.txt”. The ransom note contains the following message:
 “Hello dear friend!
Your files are encrypted, and, as a result you can’t use it. You must visit our page to get instructions about decryption process. All encrypted files have got a 6d4q6r3o extension.

How does REvil ransomware proliferate?
As with other GandCrab ransomware variants, REvil ransomware follows the same revenue system which allows cyber crooks to spread the threat using several techniques. According to security experts, REvil ransomware proliferate using an active exploitation of a vulnerability in the Oracle WebLogic which is known as “CVE-2019-2725”. It also uses malicious spam email campaigns and phishing campaigns with links and attachments, as well as malvertising campaigns which leads to the RIG exploit kit.
