What is NEMTY ransomware? And how does it execute its attack?

NEMTY ransomware is a newly discovered file-encrypting virus that carries references to the Russian president, as well as antivirus software. It is referred to as “NEMTY” since it uses a “.NEMTY” extension in marking the files it encrypt. According to security experts, it uses a mutex or a mutually exclusive object – a flag that allows programs to control resources by granting them to one execution threat at a time. Aside from that, NEMTY ransomware also verifies a computer to see if it’s from Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Ukraine. The purpose of this verification is not to exempt the hosts from getting files encrypted – it simply marks the system as being in one of the five countries and then sends the data to the attacker which includes the operating system, computer name, computer ID and username.
During the encryption, NEMTY ransomware excludes certain folders that are needed in booting the OS, as well as file extensions like binaries, shortcuts and log data in the system. It uses the AES encryption algorithm in locking its targeted files. Once it’s done encrypting them, it adds the “.NEMTY” extension to every affected file and releases a file named “NEMTY-DECRYPT.txt” which contains the following message:
“—=== NEMTY PROJECT ===—

How does NEMTY ransomware spread over the web?
At the time of writing, it isn’t clear yet how exactly NEMTY ransomware proliferates but according to security researchers, it could be deployed via compromised Remote Desktop connections. Aside from that, it could also spread using malicious spam emails, as well as fraudulent downloads, exploit kits, fake software and fake software updates. This is why you need to keep both your system and antivirus programs updated in order to keep your computer safe from this kind of cyber threat.
You can obliterate NEMTY ransomware from your computer by following the removal steps provided below and the advanced steps that follow.

Try to recover your encrypted files using the Shadow Volume copies
Restoring your encrypted files using Windows’ Previous Versions feature will only be effective if NEMTY ransomware hasn’t deleted the shadow copies of your files. But still, this is one of the best and free methods there is, so it’s definitely worth a shot.
To restore the encrypted file, right-click on it and select Properties, a new window will pop-up, then proceed to Previous Versions. It will load the file’s previous version before it was modified. After it loads, select any of the previous versions displayed on the list like the one in the illustration below. And then click the Restore button.
