What is Fordan ransomware? And how does it work?
Fordan ransomware is a dangerous threat that could lock valuable files in an infected computer. It is yet another one of the latest variants of Djvu/STOP ransomware. This new malware strain uses a “.fordan” extension in marking the files it encrypts and demands a ransom of $980 to its victims.
Once it infects a computer, it will drop its malicious payload in the system and implement a series of commands in the system in order to connect it to a Command and Control server controlled remotely by the attackers. After the malicious payload is dropped, it downloads more of its malicious components from the remote server and puts them into system folders. It then makes entries in the Windows Registry so that it can run automatically with each start of the infected computer. It could also launch or repress processes in the Windows environment. Following these changes in the system, Fordan ransomware supposedly starts the encryption using both the AES and RSA 1024 ciphers. Once the encryption is completed, it appends the .fordan suffix to every encrypted file and opens a text file named “_readme.txt” which contains the following message:
Don’t worry my friend, you can return all your files!

Try to recover your encrypted files using the Shadow Volume copies
Restoring your encrypted files marked with the “.fordan” extension using Windows’ Previous Versions feature will only be effective if Fordan ransomware hasn’t deleted the shadow copies of your files. But still, this is one of the best and free methods there is, so it’s definitely worth a shot.
To restore the encrypted file, right-click on it and select Properties, a new window will pop-up, then proceed to Previous Versions. It will load the file’s previous version before it was modified. After it loads, select any of the previous versions displayed on the list like the one in the illustration below. And then click the Restore button.
