What is BDKR ransomware? And how does it carry out its attack?

BDKR ransomware is a crypto-virus designed to lock data in a computer and extort money from its victims. This is the latest variant of LockCrypt ransomware and seems to be as destructive as its predecessors. Once its malicious payload (fcr.exe) is dropped in the system, it begins to carry out its destructive attack.
Its malicious payload connects the computer to a remote Command and Control server controlled by the attackers. From this remote server, BDKR ransomware downloads more of its malicious components and places them on system folders. These components are then used to gather information about the user and for stealth protection. It also modifies some entries in the Windows Registry allowing the crypto-malware to run every time a user starts the computer. After the modifications, it scans the computer for files with specific formats such as:
Once it finds its encrypted files, it encrypts them using a combination of AES 256 and RSA 2048 encryption algorithms. After the encryption, it appends .BDKR extension to each one of the encrypted files and releases a file named “How To Restore Files.txt” which is placed in every folder that contains an encoded data. This ransom note contains the following message:
“Important !!!
Your personal id – {ID}
Warning: all your files are infected with an unknown virus.
To decrypt you need to contact at
[email protected].
The decoder card is received by bitcoin.
You can buy bitcoins from the following links ://blockchain.info/wallet
Do not try to restore files your self, this will lead to the loss of files forever
You can send us 2-3 encoded files.
And attach for testing, we will return them to you for FREE”
At the time of writing, there is still no way of recovering the files encrypted by BDKR ransomware without having to pay the ransom. Even so, that does not mean that you should go ahead and pay it, after all cyber criminals can’t be trusted. The best thing that you can do for now is to use whatever backup copy you have of your important files and then terminate BDKR ransomware from your computer.
How does BDKR ransomware spread online?
Like other variants of LockCrypt ransomware, BDKR ransomware also uses Phishing emails in spreading its malicious payload. Thus, you need to be more cautious in downloading and opening attachments or clicking links from emails especially the ones that are sent by suspicious-looking senders.
