Since the release of Windows 10 v1803, a lot of users who updated their computers to this update have faced a couple of issues and this time a new one was reported. This particular issue is about the audio in their Windows 10 PCs. Many users were not thrilled and are even furious as they simply cannot use their computers without a sound. Especially for the ones who are fond of YouTube or the ones who constantly watch trending videos on Facebook. Needless to say, watching videos without sound or listening to music without a sound is simply pointless.
If you are one of the users suffering from this problem, worry not, as this post will help you get through it. The audio problem might be an unresponsive microphone, or you it could also be some cracking or popping sounds when you play either an audio or video file.
Since Microsoft has changed the audio settings layout to the new Windows 10 format, the audio settings layout has never been great. However, because of this change, some computers encounter an error, one of which is an unresponsive microphone. If it’s the same case as your computer, here’s what you have to do:
Step 1: Go to Settings > Privacy > Microphone.
Step 2: From there, make sure that the “Allow apps to access your microphone” option is active.

On the other hand, if you’re dealing with some cracking sounds issue, it might be because you’re using a laptop that’s running on battery mode. If your laptop is indeed running in this mode, Windows 10 puts the audio driver to sleep from time to time so it can extend battery life. When you try to play an audio file, Windows 10 will automatically awaken the audio driver. However, in the new Windows 10 v1803, the process tends to cause some popping or cracking sound. Don’t fret as it’s only a minor problem that could be remedied with a simple fix. How? Follow the steps below but before you do that, make sure to create a system restore point.
Step 1: Tap the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box.
Step 2: Then type in regedit in the field and tap Enter on your keyboard to open the Registry Editor.
Step 3: After that, navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class

Step 4: Now locate the registry key that says:
{4d36e96c-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}
Step 5: Once you locate the key, you should find a series of numbered keys – open each one of the keys until you find a key named “PowerSettings”.
Step 6: The next thing you have to do is to look for the key named “ConservationIdleTime” which should be located on the right side. Then change its value to “0”.
Step 7: Also look for the keys named “PerformanceIdleTime” and “IdlePowerState” and make sure to set their default value to “0”.
