Microsoft recently celebrated a milestone as Windows 10 became the number one most-popular operating system among Steam users.
The surge in usage was likely related to the fact that Windows 10 became a “recommended” upgrade for Windows 7 and 8 users last week.
Gamers have also switched en masse to Windows 10 for cutting edge features like DirectX 12.
The Steam report from March 2016 on Steam shows that Windows 10 (64-bit) is now installed on 36.97% of all devices that run Steam.
That’s an increase of 2.96% from February. More importantly, it pushes Windows 10 past the long-running champion, Windows 7, which fell to 32.99% in March.

Windows 7 is Kind of Still the Champion

Some Windows 7 fans are pointing out that Windows 10 isn’t quite the undisputed champion yet.
If you count the 64 bit and 32 bit installations for Windows 7 and Windows 10, then the OS still accounts for 39.96% of all Steam installs, compared to 38.26% for Windows 10.
Windows 10 is still behind in most usage charts. However, this is one of the first major victories for Windows 10 over its biggest “rival”, Windows 7.
